About Us

Original YMCA building constructed in 1893 at 399 Springfield Avenue in Summit.

The Summit Area YMCA proudly serves the communities of Summit, Springfield, Millburn, Short Hills, Berkeley Heights, New Providence, Gillette and Stirling.

Our Mission: The Summit Area YMCA champions positive values in youth, strengthens families, and builds healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

Since our founding in 1886, the Summit Area YMCA has striven to strengthen the foundations of our communities with programs that develop youth, foster healthy lifestyles, and promote social responsibility. Our commitment is to always make our programs accessible to all, regardless of ability to pay.

Our YMCA is a place where individuals and families from all walks of life feel they belong and where they can develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle.  At the YMCA, no one is turned away because of an inability to pay. We offer access to YMCA programs, services, and facilities, and provide for those individuals and families who may not be able to afford the full cost of our programs, services and facilities. As one of the area's preeminent charitable organizations, the YMCA engages in fundraising through the annual Strong Kids Campaign, special events at the branch level, grants, bequests, or individual, corporate or foundation support.

The YMCA is governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees which establishes operating policies, provides planning and strategic direction to the association and secures the resources needed to advance the YMCA’s mission. Each of our branches has a volunteer Board of Advisors which is charged with assisting the staff in meeting the needs of the local community.
